The upcoming zombie-slaying title Lollipop Chainsaw looks sugary-sweet with its cotton-candy cheerleader princess protagonist, but the latest behind-the-scenes video about the game’s music shows the development team is laying on the style as thick as peanut butter.
Featuring sound director Akira Yamaoka from Grasshopper Manufacture and lead singer Jimmy Urine from the electro-punk band Mindless Self, the video at GamesRadar.com explains how the pair used a combination of influences to put together a kick-ass score and turn things up to 11 on their boss battles.
Yamaoka said he was primarily influenced by the music of the 80’s, and wanted to bring that into the game at large. The full track list includes several gems, including Cherry Bomb from Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (a personal favorite). Urine handled all the boss battle music, and discussed how he started with the zombies’ individual character themes and proceeded to “f*** it up and chop it up and make it a little bit more crazy.” Urine himself is in the game as a punk rocker zombie boss Zed, so expect his own personal influence during that fight.
You can watch the full video at GamesRadar and check out the announced tracklist for the game. Like most things with Lollipop Chainsaw, it’s totally NSFW.
Lollipop Chainsaw is scheduled for a June 12 release on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
